“Six Hours on a Wednesday: Why Jack McCoy Makes Every Minute Worth It”

There are people who enter your life quietly, without any big announcement or dramatic moment, and yet somehow they become one of the most positive parts of your week. That’s exactly what it has felt like working with Jack McCoy as my support worker. From day one, he showed up with this calm, open, easygoing energy that made everything feel more comfortable than I expected. I’ve had different support workers over the years, and it’s honestly rare to find someone who gets things right without needing a long explanation, someone who listens properly, someone who talks to you like a friend rather than someone who is being paid to spend time with you. Jack has this natural ability to make sessions feel relaxed, fun and genuinely meaningful in ways that are hard to put into words, but today I want to try — because he’s earned the longest, most detailed blog I can write.

Some of the best moments with Jack happen without planning, like when we walked into Westfield Carindale and decided to get a Santa photo together. I honestly didn’t expect him to join in. Most support workers in the past would stand to the side, wait for the moment to pass, or just let me sit there alone while they watched. But Jack didn’t hesitate for even a second. He sat down next to me, smiled, and joined the photo like it was the most normal thing in the world. That moment told me more about his personality than anything else. He doesn’t treat the session like a list of tasks. He doesn’t treat me like a case file. He treats me like a mate, someone worth sharing the moment with. Having a Santa photo with a support worker shouldn’t feel special, but somehow it did — not because of the photo itself, but because of what it showed: that Jack genuinely wants to be part of the day, part of the fun, part of the memories. I still think about that moment and smile because it wasn’t just a Christmas photo, it was a reminder that I’m not just being supported — I’m connecting with someone who genuinely cares.

And then there’s the coffee. You can tell a lot about someone by the way they spend time with you over a drink. With Jack, grabbing coffee never feels rushed, never feels like he’s counting minutes, never feels like he’s waiting for the session to be over. He sits with me, actually sits, and talks like a real friend. We laugh, we talk about random things, life things, funny things, future ideas, and sometimes nothing too deep at all — but that’s the beauty of it. It’s not forced. It’s not awkward. It’s easy. And that’s rare. Coffee with Jack has become one of my favourite parts of our sessions because it feels real. It’s not just “support,” it’s connection. It’s comfort. It’s a little reset in the middle of the day where everything feels normal and relaxed. I can be myself completely, and he matches that energy without judgement or pressure. There’s something really special about being around someone who makes you feel calmer without even trying.

Another thing I really appreciate is how much Jack supports my love for making content. Not every support worker understands how important that is to me, or how much joy it brings me to film things, record memories, take photos or create little moments to share online. Some workers see it as a distraction or something extra they have to help with. Jack doesn’t. He actually gets involved. He helps film. He takes photos. He suggests fun angles or ideas. He doesn’t roll his eyes or act annoyed — he actually enjoys helping me make things look good. That means more than people realise because creating content is a part of who I am. It’s one of the ways I express myself, share my experiences and hold onto memories. When someone joins in with that, instead of making you feel annoying for wanting to record something, it makes the whole moment even better. It turns simple outings into something fun and creative. It makes sessions feel like experiences, not appointments. And Jack makes that happen naturally, effortlessly, every time.

But honestly, the best part of working with Jack isn’t just the highlights — it’s the energy he brings every single session. He’s the kind of support worker who listens without judgement, who talks in a way that feels natural, who pays attention when something is important to you, and who doesn’t make you feel silly for having preferences or emotions. He’s understanding when I need something done differently. He adjusts without getting annoyed. He respects boundaries. He knows how to have a good laugh, how to lighten the mood, how to give space when needed, and how to be present when it counts. That balance is rare. And it’s something I appreciate more and more every time we hang out.

There’s also something comfortable about the way Jack drives, talks and shares moments during the day. Even when the world feels overwhelming or noisy, he brings a steady, calm vibe that helps me stay grounded. He doesn’t rush me. He doesn’t act like the session is a chore. He makes everything feel easy — even simple things like walking around the shops, having lunch, or just exploring different places. He makes everyday things feel like proper outings. Nothing ever feels boring or awkward. It always feels like two people enjoying the day together.

What I think I love most is that I walk away from each session feeling better than when it started. Not drained. Not stressed. Not tense. Just… better. Happier. Lighter. More myself. That’s what a good support worker does — they bring out the best parts of you without even trying. And Jack does that naturally.

The Santa photo moment.
The good coffees.
The content creation.
The laughs.
The calmness.
The genuine connection.
The respect.
The comfort.
All of it comes together to make every session feel memorable and meaningful, never forced or routine. Jack isn’t just there to support me — he’s someone I genuinely enjoy spending time with, someone who makes life a little easier and a lot more fun.

Working with him has been one of the best support experiences I’ve had in a long time, maybe ever. And I’m really grateful for it. Here’s to more coffees, more content, more laughs, and more good days ahead with Jack McCoy — because if the start is already this good, the future sessions are going to be even better.
