An Inspiring Evening at Brisbane Powerhouse with Annastacia Palaszczu

There are some moments in life that stay with you forever, and attending the launch event for Annastacia Palaszczuk’s new book at Brisbane Powerhouse was definitely one of those moments for me. It was more than just a book event — it was an evening filled with inspiration, laughter, kindness, and memories that I will treasure for years to come.

The atmosphere at Brisbane Powerhouse that evening was absolutely incredible. The venue itself always has such a creative and welcoming feeling, but on this particular night there was an extra buzz in the air. People from all walks of life had gathered together to hear former Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk speak about her life, her political journey, and the release of her new book. Being someone who has followed Queensland politics for many years, especially throughout some of the state’s most challenging times, I felt genuinely excited to be there.

What made the evening even more special was that I brought my cousin along with me. Family means a lot to me, and I always enjoy sharing experiences with the people closest to me. This event happened to fall close to my cousin’s birthday, so I decided I wanted to make the night extra meaningful by shouting her a copy of Annastacia’s new book as a birthday present. I thought it would be something unique and memorable — not just another gift, but an experience we could both look back on.

As we arrived at the Powerhouse, there were people chatting excitedly in the foyer, lining up for drinks, and browsing copies of the book before the conversation even began. You could tell that many people admired Annastacia not only as a politician, but as someone who helped guide Queensland through incredibly difficult periods, especially during COVID-19 and natural disasters. There was a real sense of respect in the room.

The event itself was hosted as a conversation between Annastacia Palaszczuk and Francis Whiting, and I have to say, Francis did an amazing job. The conversation flowed naturally and covered everything from Annastacia’s upbringing and early life, through to her time in politics, leadership challenges, and life after being Premier. It did not feel overly formal or scripted. Instead, it felt warm, genuine, and personal.

One of the things I enjoyed most was hearing Annastacia speak honestly about the pressures of leadership and public life. So often politicians are seen only through television screens or news headlines, but hearing her speak in person made everything feel much more human. She spoke about resilience, determination, and the importance of staying connected to ordinary Queenslanders. As someone who lived through those years in Queensland, especially during the uncertainty of the pandemic, it was powerful to hear her reflections firsthand.

Throughout the evening there were moments of humour too. Francis Whiting and Annastacia bounced off each other really well, and the audience laughed many times during the conversation. It reminded me that behind politics are real people with stories, emotions, challenges, and funny moments just like everyone else.

As the event finished, the line for book signings quickly became very long. My cousin, however, became a little shy about going up to meet Annastacia in person. I completely understood. Sometimes meeting someone well known can feel a little overwhelming, especially in a busy environment with lots of people around. Even though she was too nervous to come up with me, I still wanted to make sure she had that special memory for her birthday.

So I lined up with both books — my own copy and the birthday copy I had bought for my cousin. Standing in the queue gave me time to take in the moment and observe how kind and patient Annastacia was with every single person she met. No matter how long the line became, she still made time for people, smiled warmly, and listened to what they had to say. That really stood out to me.

When it was finally my turn, I explained that one of the books was for my cousin’s birthday and that she had been a little too shy to come up herself. Annastacia was incredibly kind about it. She not only signed the book, but she also wrote a lovely little “happy birthday” message inside for my cousin. That small gesture honestly meant so much. It turned an already special gift into something deeply personal and unforgettable.

I remember walking away from the signing table feeling genuinely happy. It was one of those moments where you realise how much little acts of kindness can mean to someone. My cousin was so excited and grateful when I gave her the signed copy with the birthday message inside. Even though she had been too shy to meet Annastacia herself, she still got to experience part of the magic of the evening.

The whole night reminded me how important events like these are. They are not just about selling books or hearing speeches. They bring people together. They create memories. They allow people to connect with stories, experiences, and ideas in a personal way. For me, it was also a reminder of how much I enjoy attending live events, meeting interesting people, and sharing experiences with family.

Brisbane Powerhouse was the perfect venue for the evening as well. There is something about the Powerhouse that always feels vibrant and alive. The combination of history, arts, culture, and community creates such a unique atmosphere. Walking through the venue after the event, holding the signed books in my hands, I felt incredibly grateful to have been part of such a memorable night.

Looking back now, I realise the evening was about far more than politics or books. It was about connection, family, kindness, and creating special moments together. Watching my cousin smile as she read the birthday message inside her book is a memory I will always hold onto.

Events like this also inspire me personally. Hearing stories of resilience and determination encourages me in my own journey. Everyone faces challenges in life, but hearing how others navigate pressure and responsibility can be motivating. Annastacia’s story reminded me that leadership is not about being perfect — it is about continuing to show up, working hard, and caring about people.

As we left the Powerhouse that night, the city lights reflected beautifully along the Brisbane River, and there was a sense of calm after such an exciting evening. It was one of those simple but meaningful nights that becomes part of your life story.

I will always remember attending Annastacia Palaszczuk’s book launch with my cousin — from the inspiring conversation with Francis Whiting, to the warm atmosphere at Brisbane Powerhouse, to the special birthday message written inside the signed book. It was an evening full of heart, and one that reminded me how powerful shared experiences and thoughtful gestures can truly be.
