An Inspiring Evening with Frances Whiting at Broadbeach Library
There is something truly special about walking into a library for an author event. The atmosphere feels calm and exciting all at once — people gathering together because of their shared love of books, storytelling, creativity and conversation. Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend an evening with bestselling Australian author Frances Whiting at Broadbeach Library on the beautiful Gold Coast, where she spoke about her latest novel, The Nocturnals. It was an unforgettable night filled with laughter, storytelling, inspiration and meaningful conversation.
As someone who enjoys books, writing, photography and creative events, this evening felt like the perfect experience. The Gold Coast always has a relaxed and welcoming vibe, and arriving at Broadbeach Library as the sun was beginning to set created the perfect atmosphere for a literary evening. People slowly filled the venue, chatting quietly while waiting for the event to begin. There was excitement in the air because Frances Whiting is such a respected Australian writer and journalist, known for her humour, warmth and incredible storytelling ability.
The Nocturnals has already been receiving wonderful praise from readers and libraries around Queensland. The novel explores friendship, secrets, loyalty and the complicated connections that stay with us throughout life. The story follows a group of five friends whose lives become deeply intertwined during their school years before tragedy and betrayal eventually pull them apart. Years later, they reunite and are forced to confront the past. The novel has been described as witty, emotional, darkly delightful and deeply human. (City of Gold Coast)
When Frances Whiting walked into the room, the audience welcomed her warmly. She instantly brought energy and humour to the evening. One thing I noticed immediately was how natural and down-to-earth she was. Even though she is a bestselling author and highly respected journalist, she spoke to the audience like old friends gathering together for coffee and conversation. That warmth made the whole evening feel personal and welcoming.
Throughout the discussion, Frances shared stories about the inspiration behind The Nocturnals and how friendship plays such an important role in shaping our lives. She spoke about the nostalgia of school friendships, the memories we carry from our younger years, and how some friendships can leave a lasting mark on us forever. Listening to her speak reminded me how powerful books can be because they allow us to reflect on our own lives and emotions while also escaping into another world.
One of my favourite parts of the evening was hearing Frances talk about the writing process itself. She explained how stories evolve over time and how characters often surprise the author while writing. As someone who enjoys writing blogs and creative pieces myself, I found this incredibly inspiring. Hearing a successful author speak openly about creativity, challenges and storytelling made me feel encouraged to continue working on my own writing projects and ideas.
The audience was fully engaged throughout the event. There were moments where everyone laughed together at Frances’ funny observations and stories, and there were also quieter moments where people listened carefully as she spoke about deeper emotional themes in the novel. It was clear that many people in the room connected personally with the themes of friendship, belonging and growing older.
The setting of Broadbeach Library made the evening even more enjoyable. Libraries are such important community spaces because they bring people together through learning, creativity and conversation. Events like this show how libraries are not just places for borrowing books — they are places where stories come alive. The Gold Coast Libraries team did a fantastic job organising the evening and creating a welcoming environment for everyone attending.
Another highlight of the night was seeing Frances interact with readers after the discussion. She spent time speaking with people individually, signing books and taking photos. It is always lovely when authors make time for their readers because those moments can mean so much. You could tell she genuinely appreciated everyone who came along to support the event.
For me personally, attending events like this is about more than just meeting an author. It is about feeling connected to the creative community and being inspired by people who share stories and ideas with the world. As someone who loves photography, blogging and creative expression, evenings like this motivate me to keep exploring my own creativity. There is something powerful about sitting in a room full of people who all appreciate books and storytelling.
The Gold Coast itself added to the magic of the experience. Broadbeach has such a relaxed coastal atmosphere, and spending the evening there made the event feel even more memorable. It felt nice to step away from everyday routines and simply enjoy an evening focused on books, conversation and creativity.
I also loved hearing how much passion Frances still has for storytelling after so many years in journalism and writing. Her enthusiasm was infectious. She reminded everyone in the room that stories matter because they help us understand ourselves and each other better. Whether through novels, blogs, photography or conversations, storytelling connects people in meaningful ways.
By the end of the night, I left feeling inspired, motivated and grateful that I had the opportunity to attend. I walked away thinking not only about The Nocturnals itself, but also about the importance of friendship, creativity and community. Events like this remind us how valuable the arts are in bringing people together and creating moments of connection.
I would absolutely recommend attending author events like this whenever possible. They offer such a unique experience because you get to hear directly from the people behind the books. You gain insight into their creative process, their inspirations and the deeper meanings behind their stories. It also reminds you that authors are real people with their own journeys, emotions and experiences.
Thank you to Frances Whiting for such an entertaining and inspiring evening, and thank you to Broadbeach Library and Gold Coast Libraries for hosting such a wonderful event. It was truly a memorable night on the Gold Coast, surrounded by books, creativity and people who love stories.
I left the library that evening feeling inspired not only as a reader, but also as a creative person myself. Nights like this stay with you long after they finish, and I know I will remember this experience for a long time to come.
